Roofing Practice Series
Roof Assemblies: Fundamentals

Description
First in the Roofing Practice series, the Roof Assemblies: Fundamentals course covers topics relevant to the practice of roof consulting and related roofing activities, including the design, manufacture, installation, observation, inspection, and maintenance of roof components and assemblies. It is targeted at current and prospective roof consultants, roof observers, architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, manufacturer representatives, students, and all other learners already in or planning to enter the building enclosure profession.

The course includes the following components:

  • Scope & Sequence downloadable PDF
  • Three instructional modules, each with a video presentation and downloadable handbook PDF to take notes.
  • Reference list
  • Summative assessment consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • Course evaluation survey

The course is divided into three one-hour instructional modules:

  • The first module, “Overview,” includes a brief history and evolution of roofing, definitions of common terms, and a breakdown of low- and steep-slope roof assembly and component types.
  • The second module, “Water and Moisture,” covers basic roof drainage principles, an introduction to psychrometrics and hygrometry, an explanation of water vapor transport and diffusion, and a discussion of design strategies and components that can mitigate water and moisture issues.
  • The third module, “Heat,” includes a description of the mechanisms of heat transfer both in general and in a roofing context, and an examination of the effect of roof components on code compliance, cost, comfort, and climate resilience.

  1. Summarize the history and evolution of roofing practices.
  2. Recognize key roofing terms and describe common roofing assemblies and their components.
  3. Explain mechanisms of water and vapor movement and heat transfer in roofs and their applications to building materials and assemblies.
  4. Relate how design strategies and roof component choices protect buildings from water and moisture issues, affect heat loss and heat gain, and consequently impact code compliance, cost, comfort, and climate resilience.

Certificate
