Description
This course covers topics relevant to the practice of roof consulting and related roofing activities, including the design, manufacture, installation, observation, inspection, and maintenance of roof components and assemblies. It is targeted at current and prospective roof consultants, roof observers, architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, manufacturers’ representatives, students, and all other learners already in or planning to enter the building enclosure profession.
The course includes the following components:
- Scope & Sequence downloadable PDF
- Three instructional modules, each with a video presentation and downloadable handbook PDF to take notes.
- Reference list
- Summative assessment consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions.
- Course evaluation survey
The course is divided into three modules:
- The first module, “Single-Ply Membranes,” explores the evolution and application of single-ply membranes, classifying various types by their characteristics. It also articulates assessment measures critical to the success of spray polyurethane foam roof systems.
- The second module, "Spray Polyurethane Foam", defines spray polyurethane foam roof systems and their common uses while detailing the essential design, preparation, and coating steps required for installation. It further emphasizes the quality assurance measures necessary to ensure the long-term performance and success of these systems.
- The third module, “Fluid-Applied Membranes and Coatings,” classifies and contrasts fluid-applied membranes and coatings and identifies their core components, characteristics, benefits, and limitations. It also outlines essential design and installation considerations, focusing on critical surface preparation and application techniques

Recommended Prerequisites
- Familiarity with basic building terminology.
- Ability to interpret architectural drawings such as plans, sections, and details.
- Comprehension of fundamental building science concepts related to structure, moisture, and heat, such as building loads, drainage, condensation, vapor drive, heat flow, and thermal resistance.

Participants are provided unlimited attempts to complete the summative assessment with a passing score of 70% or higher.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the role, placement, evolution, and usage of polymeric roof membranes including single-ply membranes, spray polyurethane foam roof systems, and fluid-applied membranes.
2. Classify types of single-ply membranes; define spray polyurethane foam roof systems, including coatings for these systems; and categorize and contrast fluid-applied membranes and coatings.
3. Articulate the components, characteristics, and limitations of single-ply roof membranes, spray polyurethane foam roof systems, and fluid-applied membranes and coatings.
4. Summarize design and installation considerations for single-ply roof membranes, spray polyurethane foam roof systems, and fluid-applied membranes and coatings.
