 This is a 16-hour course classroom extension of the IIBEC Manual of Practice. It provides an overview of consultant roles that are unique to the roofing, exterior walls, and waterproofing industry. The course also identifies the consultant practices that are common to these three broad disciplines. Design solutions must be buildable in the real world. Façade design intent, geometry, and materials must come together in a way that allows structural loading, environmental protection, and optimal long-term performance. Performance mock-ups bridge the gap between conceptual design and construction and allow project teams to test expectations and fine tune the plans prior to installation. This step is particularly important with innovative façade designs that incorporate new materials or complex integrations between various standard assemblies. A performance mock-up is commonly understood as a tool to test previously untested cladding and glazing assemblies. However, it can also be a valuable tool for understanding constructability, sequencing, and integration detailing. Transition detailing, in particular, is unique to each project, and while the design may include transition concepts and shop drawings may be carefully detailed, getting the systems to work together can be a challenge and result in unintended design changes, as well as schedule and cost impacts during construction. In this presentation, we will explore how performance mock-ups translate design intricacies into constructible assemblies, and ultimately, a successful project.  Reroofing Course Description This 6-hour course covers a range of concepts, including a discussion of the steps required for the roof consultant to successfully evaluate an existing roof and to make decisions regarding roof design using available references, resources, and evaluation techniques. Speakers will present a review of reroof options and decision-making principles, building code considerations, reroof considerations, and examples of roof systems. Proper preparation of plans and specifications is presented to clarify the delivery of these documents. This course is designed for those who design roof systems and for those that need to understand roofing heat transfer and moisture affects on roofing systems.  The skills taught in this course are of use to all those involved in roof performance and are necessary skills for the RRC.  The principles taught have applicability to walls as well as roofs but the primary focus is on roof systems. The content moves quickly beyond basic thermal terminology and calculations to cooling-load calculations, annual energy consumptions and payback calculations, cool roofing, and temperature calculations within cross sections. Moisture starts with the psychrometric chart and moist-air properties. Additional topics include vapor retarders, the effects of moisture on insulation, air barriers, and mold issues. Read more

This is the recorded version of the live two-day course and is a first component of a two-part series covering, in detail, aspects of the technology and science of roofing. It covers the history and evolution of roofing up to present-day common applications. It features terminology and technical information regarding roof decks and structures, roof insulation, bitumen membranes, built-up and modified bitumen membranes and flashing systems. An understanding of heat transfer theory, moisture, thermal design, and the calculation of U-factors will also be presented. Highlights of the program include: critical aspects of roof decking and related supporting structures, heat transfer and practical heat transfer calculations, the function of heat transfer and the different types of roof insulation, the technology behind roofing bitumens and their related BUR and modified-bitumen membranes, and basic flashing nomenclature and bituminous flashing system construction.
