Description The deeper the foundation, the higher the risk for water infiltration. Below-grade waterproofing systems are a critical part of the overall building enclosure and should be carefully selected to properly protect the structure and interior below-grade space. This presentation will discuss the challenges specific to deep foundation waterproofing as well as provide best practices for various below-grade elements with which the waterproofing will interface. Description In this seminar, presenters provide recommendations for the use of drone-based 3-D photogrammetry modeling in building enclosure consulting practice. Discussion includes the different types of drones, drone program requirements, and recommendations, as well as the photogrammetry processing software and computer requirements. Demonstrations of example workflows and case projects will be shown to further enhance the learners’ experience. What steps should I follow? I’m working on a specification for a lightning protection system—can you help? Who should install and inspect a lightning protection system? Come get the answers to these questions and more. Lightning protection systems protect a building from structural damage, physical harm to individuals inside, and destruction of the electrical and electronic infrastructure. This course will provide the knowledge to clearly discuss the proper way to outline and conduct the specification, installation, and inspection of a lightning protection system.  Authors/Presenters Tim Harger Executive Director, The Lightning Protection Institute Harger is an industry expert with an entrepreneurial spirit. For over 35 years, he has engaged in all aspects of the lightning protection industry: manufacturing, installation, and inspection. With these diverse experiences, he developed a vision of growth for the lightning protection industry that involves high standards, education, and partnerships. Harger’s desire to maintain high standards comes from his involvement with ANSI accreditation and the ISO certification processes. Furthermore, he understands the value of partnerships to gain different perspectives and to learn best practices, which can be seen in his involvement in the NFPA 780 Committee and industry associations such as AIA and IIBEC. Harger holds a bachelor of science in industrial technology from Iowa State University. He also is a certified LPI Master Installer Designer. He has served as the executive director of the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) for just over two years and has been the program manager for the LPI-IP, which is the industry’s third-party inspection program, for over 10 years.   Kelley Collins Director of Business Development and Communications, The Lightning Protection Institute Collins has been immersed in the science and technology industries for over 25 years, with diverse roles such as executive management, marketing, sales, and consulting. She was intrigued with the science and the opportunity for growth in the lightning protection industry and joined LPI just over two years ago. Currently, Collins works with the LPI developing strategy, partnerships, and communication to support the expansion and awareness of the lightning protection industry. She attended the University of Georgia’s Terry School of Business with a degree in management and marketing. This course was initially presented at the 2022 International Trade Show and Convention in Orlando, FL.  What is the business case for achieving a greater level of diversity and inclusion at your company? Description This presentation initially took place at IIBEC's 2022 International Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, Florida. Although there is currently no ASTM method specifically for testing built-up and modified bitumen (bituminous) roof systems for hail-caused damage, laboratories routinely test bituminous roof systems for hail-caused damage. This presentation discusses the ASTM test methods that are commonly referenced in these laboratory testing reports. This presentation also includes findings from research the author’s company has performed using ASTM D3746, Standard Test Method for Impact Resistance of Bituminous Roofing Systems, to illustrate what hail-caused damage of bituminous roofs looks like and to compare our ASTM D3746 test results to actual hail-caused damage to bituminous roofs. The intent is to provide exemplar photographic examples for visual comparative purposes. Description As our urban and suburban spaces are becoming increasingly congested, the building industry is designing and constructing projects in areas and conditions that were previously considered uninhabitable, including below-grade spaces under constant hydrostatic pressure. Efforts to make such spaces habitable may include the use of waterproofing systems not previously used in the region. Discussion of the application of familiar materials in unfamiliar conditions may be useful to colleagues and industry professionals to help identify potential hazards and pitfalls associated with these waterproofing applications. In addition to the selection of waterproofing material and design detailing, this presentation explores preconstruction activities and applied strategies from the presenters’ experience. Various lessons learned in the field from projects with similar hydrostatic conditions are also reviewed. These lessons include recommended considerations for concrete placement, appropriate interfaces with other building enclosure systems, and repair solutions for possible damages resulting from unanticipated field conditions.
